The break-in and burglary occurred around 2:30 am on Thursday, July 27, at the Owego-Apalachin School District bus garage on Elm Street in the Village of Owego.
The two boys broke a window of a door to the garage, entered the building, and caused more damage. Bus #193 was in the garage for repairs and had its key in the ignition. The teenagers started the 60-passenger bus, crashed it through the garage door, and drove away.

While headed east on Route 17, the driver lost control of the bus near exit 66 in Apalachin. The bus rolled down an embankment and landed on its side facing west. The boys got out of the bus and headed back to Exit 66 on foot. They were stopped and questioned by New York State Police around 3:15 am and were transported to the Public Safety Building on Route 38 in Owego. The boys were then taken by ambulance to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment.

According to Owego-Apalachin School District officials, the damages are about $100,000.
