Democratic Committee Opposes Lounsberry Power Plant

The Tioga County Democratic Committee last month released a resolution opposing the proposed Lounsberry Power Plant.

Here is the text of their resolution:

Resolution Regarding Proposed Lounsberry Power Plant
Tioga County Democratic Committee

Whereas, the E-Corp Twin Tier Power (TTP), LLC, based in Houston, Texas, and the Tioga County Industrial Development Agency (TCIDA) intend to see to the construction and operation of a 520 megawatt, gas fired electric generating plant at the Lounsberry industrial site in the Town of Nichols in Tioga County, and

Whereas, the E-Corp Twin Tier Power (TTP), LLC, and CNYOG are the same company, broken down into individual limited liability companies for business reasons, and

Whereas, TTP, as stated in the pre-application on file for this state-of-the0art facility, intends to draw some 4.3 million gallons of fresh water daily from the local aquifer, while returning 576 thousand gallons of waste water to the Susquehanna Rivers, as a result causing acid rain with its deleterious effects on both the habitat and the aquifer, and

Whereas, TTP would generate over one thousand tons of pollution to be emitted into the air each year by this proposed facility, containing nitrogen oxides (NOX), volatile organic compounds (VOC), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), the carcinogens benzine, toluene, ethylbenzene and xyhlene (BETX), and other particulate matter (PM), based on information provided by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection about a similar state-of-the-art power plant located at Bridgeport, Connecticut, and

Whereas, TTP intends for the facility to occupy 45 acres of wetlands and farmlands, utilizing New York Empire Zone credits and rebates totaling over 226 million tax dollars, given to them over ten years, while only providing some twenty jobs after construction, and

Whereas, TTP, and NYSEG as a public utility, and not the public, would decide where the required power transmission lines would be run, and,

Whereas, existing coal-fed power generation plants should be updated and converted to be compliant with EPA standards, rather than building new facilities in other areas, such as Tioga County.

Now, therefore, be it hereby resolved:

The Tioga County Democratic Committee, and many other members of the public in Tioga County, question the wisdom of allowing the proposed electric generating facility to be constructed within the vicinity of the County, and urges the Tioga County Legislature to take action to remove the threat of this blight from this area by means of its appropriate direction to the Tioga County Industrial Development Agency, its agent in this manner.
