Apalachin Fire Department
by Mary Ann Cascarino, AFD Chief
• EMS Update
The Apalachin Fire Department has contracted with the Village
of Owego to provide an EMS crew to be stationed in the Apalachin District
from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, Mondays through Fridays, beginning November 18.
This crew consists of Lisa Siebert, Paramedic, and Tom Bidwell, EMT-Basic.
Thanks to their presence, our community will benefit by having a much faster
response time. We look forward to a very positive and upbeat working relationship
with our new sub-leased employees who are here to serve this community.
• New Firefighters
Alicia Loso has recently completed her new firefighter training
and has begun driver training for the squad. Does Alicia go in burning
buildings? NO! But she is now capable of helping out at a fire
scene or EMS calls in a support capacity.
Mike Braunscheidel has also completed his new firefighter training
and is serving as an apprentice. Although Mike is not allowed in the danger
zone of a fire scene, he too can assist in a support capacity for both
fire and squad.
Does it take some extra superman capabilities to be a firefighter?
NO! It just takes someone who is in good physical condition and willing
to help their neighbors experiencing difficult times.
If you feel a twinge of interest, please stop by Station 1, 230
Pennsylvania Avenue, any Wednesday evening between 7:00 and 9:00
pm. Our firefighters would be most happy to speak with you. Or you may
call Dave Ritz, our Recruitment and Retention firefighter at 625-2057.
And by the way, AFD pays for members physicals and training. Members
are also treated to an annual banquet and clam bake. Don't forget the Field
Days the first week in June.
• Help-A-Hydrant
And please don't forget that hydrant near your home. The snow
will soon be flying and your help is needed in keeping the hydrant clear
of snow for a three foot radius. Please call 625-2790 to offer your
services.
