It's November 1977. Band leader Guy Lombardo, 75 dies in Texas of heart disease. He will always be remembered for his New Year's Eve broadcasts of Auld Lang Syne with the Royal Canadians. 

 A 35-year-old man in New Orleans goes on an hour-long shooting spree and wounds 10 people.

 The Soviet Union celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution.

 Ed Koch, 52, is elected mayor of New York City.

 Queen Elizabeth's first grandchild is born to Princess Anne and her husband 
Captain Mark Phillips. The child, who will be a commoner, will be 5th in line to the throne.

 The American Film Institute names Gone With the Wind as the greatest motion picture in US film making history. Citizen Kane and Casablanca are chose are ranked second and third.

  About 6,000 people are killed when a cyclone and tidal wave hit southern India.

 The State Department of Transportation and the Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study meet with residents of Owego to get their reactions on a proposed bridge between Apalachin and Campville. The proposed bridge would have to be approved by state and federal authorities. Construction would not start before 1982.

 Tioga County farmers lost more than 1.6 million dollars in corn and hay crops due to the heavy rains in September and October.

 Alfred J. Libous, 49, is re-elected mayor of Binghamton. 

 William Englehard is re-elected to his 4th term as Town of Owego Supervisor.

 The Tioga United Way's 1978 Campaign raises $178,158 - $1,608 more than their goal.

 The Crystal Tea Room in Johnson City, owned by 72-year-old Italian immigrant Tony Tona, closes after 40 years.

 Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Johnson City is dedicated. The all-wooden church (pictured above) was built to resemble the traditional architecture of churches in the Ukraine.

 Best selling books include The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough, The Honorable Schoolboy by John le Carre, The Book of Lists by David Wallechinsky, and Six Men by Alistair Cooke.

 Movies playing at local theaters include Oh, God with George Burns and John Denver; Damnation Alley, Race for Your life, Charlie Brown; Bobby Deerfield with Al Pacino; First Love with William Katt and Susan Dey; Looking for Mr. Goodbar; The Spy Who Loved Me; and Darby O'Gill and the Little People.

 Tuesday night TV shows include The Paper Chase, The Man from Atlantis, The Fitzpatricks, Happy Days, Mulligan's Stew, M*A*S*H, Police Woman, Family, and Lou Grant.

 A one-way air ticket from Binghamton to New York City costs $38 on Allegheny Airlines.

 A Butter ball turkey costs 69¢ per pound, butternut squash costs 10¢ per pound, a 9-ounce package of Cool Whip costs 49¢, and a Mrs. Smith's frozen deluxe pumpkin pie costs $1.19.
