Grand Re-Opening Set for Tioga County Historical Society

The Tioga County Historical Society will have a Grand Re-Opening and Reception on Saturday, October 26, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm to celebrate its newly renovated building. A new folk art gallery, history of Tioga County chronology, three new changing exhibit galleries, and the genealogy library are all to be highlighted.

It was over one year ago when a plan was proposed to the Board of Trustees to renovate the museum, improve display of its collection, and the society's genealogy library. The plan was approved at its May 2001 Board of Trustees Meeting. Now, a year later, the society is re-opening its doors.

The museum's collection was moved into a secure closed storage space, freeing up two more rooms for exhibits. Painting, carpeting, and the installation of new track lighting now give the 40-year-old building a new look.

The society encompasses a museum, the historical society, and a genealogy library. The library holds books not only as part of the museum collection, but also for everyday genealogy research. The card catalog holds 300,000 surname cards. The society has a hold of folders with research done by patrons as well as society volunteers. The library is open Tuesday through Friday, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The Historical Society Museum is at 110 Front Street in Owego.
