Rose Garrity Chosen BPW ‘Woman of the Year'
Rose Garrity
During National Business Women's Week, October 21-25, Business and Professional Women (BPW) local organizations honor businesswomen of accomplishment in communities all across New York State. The Owego BPW Club is proud to present this award to Rose Garrity in honor of her dedication to persons in not only in our community of Tioga County but across the United States.  The award will be presented to Rose at a reception in her honor on Friday, November 8, 2002, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm at the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Garrity has dedicated over 25 years to bettering the lives of crime victims, survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, the poor, senior citizens, and other oppressed groups.  What began as volunteer work for various agencies soon became a career and a way of life. In 1986, Ms. Garrity helped to found A New Hope Center, where she currently guides, directs, and continues to develop an array of services to families dealing with domestic violence and other crimes.

Ms Garrity frequently gives seminars countrywide as a nationally recognized educator in the domestic violence field.  She trains organizations and professionals who are running batterer programs. Her articles are published in domestic violence trade publications, and she is currently a member of several coalitions and councils, including: Southern Tier Regional Coalition of Victim Services Providers, National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Regional New York State Human Rights Council, NYS Coalition Against Sexual Assault, National Ending Men's Violence Network, NAACP, and the NYS Coalition Against Domestic Violence, (President, Board of Directors).

Rose is an inspiration to those who work for her and know her. She has given much of herself in the hope of making lives of others better.  According to Rose, "It certainly is hard work and sometime a bit depressing.  But, it is also rewarding because every day I receive thank you's from people who, until they came to us, felt they had no place to turn."

Please join the BPW in celebration of this honor for Rose Garrity.
