Lorraine Braman Barbarash Named Athletic Director
Named Athletic Director Lorraine Braman Barbarash, daughter of Maurice
and May Braman of Beach Road in Apalachin, is the new athletic director
of the Washingtonville, New York, school district. Lorraine, of Chester,
New York, was one of eight sitting athletic directors who applied for the
job. She came from the Ossining, New York, school district as the athletic
director for the last two years.
Barbarash spent 21 years at George Wingate High School in the
Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. She began as a substitute in 1978 and
worked her way up to assistant principal for health and physical education
in 1983. The population of Wingate was 3,000 students.
She formed the George Wingate girls soccer program in 1982. In
1986, she became the first female to coach boy's soccer in the New York
City area. She quit coaching in 1996 because of increasing job demands
and the fact that her son, David, would be an opposing player.
She and her husband, Randy, an assistant principal at Clarkston
South in East Nyack, New York, moved to Washingtonville when she got the
Ossining job.
Lorraine graduated from Owego Free Academy in 1971. She attended
college at Keuka College and graduated from Ashland College in Ashland,
Ohio. She received her Masters Degree from Kings College in New Jersey.
