Owego Town Supervisor Seeks Re-election

Carol Binder Sweeney has announcing her intention to run for re-election as the Republican candidate for the position of Owego Town Supervisor.

She is currently completing her third two-year term as supervisor. Previously she served for four years as Councilwoman on the Owego Town Board. Sweeney is Chairwoman of the Tioga County Council of Local Governments and represents the Town of Owego on the Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study (BMTS) Policy Committee and the Tioga County Public Transit Advisory Council. She also serves on the NYS Division for Women Southern Tier Advisory Council and Senator Libous' Southern Tier Rail Merger Advisory Committee.

Sweeney has been honored by being named the 1996 Tioga County Republican of the Year and was also named the Tioga County Federated Republican Club's 1994 Woman of Achievement.

Sweeney stated, "During my tenure as supervisor I have been successful in promoting economic development for our town, searching for and obtaining grants, maximizing interest revenue on the town's funds and containing costs in our town government. I have fought for funding for rehabilitation or replacement of bridges in our town and for adding an additional river crossing and am excited to see the new Apalachin/Campville bridge near completion. I have overseen the development of a new sewage treatment facility behind the Sanmina (formerly Hadco) plant to encourage business expansion, the redevelopment of most of our town wells, and the extension of water and sewer service to over 200 homeowners. Given another term, I will continue to work to improve the economy and the quality of life here in our community."

Sweeney graduated Summa Cum Laude from SUNY - Albany with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. She previously was a high school mathematics teacher and a computer programmer with IBM.

She resides at 23 Alpine Drive in Apalachin with her husband, Stephen, and two sons, Matthew, 19, and Daniel, 17. She has lived in the Town of Owego for more than 31 years.
