Foster Parents Needed

The Tioga County Department of Social Services is looking for special families who are able to provide a stable and loving home environment for children. By becoming a foster parent, you could help to make a difference in the life of a child. You will receive complete certification training, ongoing support and reimbursement for the cost of care. Local Agent Receives Industry Awards

Brian Pl Schendel of Tioga Center, New York, district representative with Aid Association for Lutherans, has been awarded a year 2000 Quality Service Award and a year 2000 Production Award by the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counselors. Mr. Schendel serves A.A.L. members in the Ithaca Elmira, Oneonta, Delhi, and Binghamton area of New York as well as the Athens, Sayre, and Towanda areas of Pennsylvania.

Soup & Salad Supper

A Soup and Salad Supper will take place on Saturday, September 16, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Newark Valley. There will be a large selection of soups and salad bar items. Beverages and a homemade dessert are included. A free will offering will be accepted. This dinner is open to the community.

The church is at 70 S. Main Street in Newark Valley.

Rummage Sale

A Rummage Sale will take place on Friday and Saturday, September 29 and 30, at the First United Methodist Church of Newark Valley. On Friday, the sale is from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. On Saturday, the sale is from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, with a Bag Sale at Noon, $1.00 per bag.

The church is at 70 S. Main Street in Newark Valley, New York.

'Nine String Banjos' at Awakenings

Awakenings Coffeehouse in Owego welcomes "Nine String Banjos" with John Klehr and Robert Siegers who will take you back to the heyday of the banjo with classic songs, complex instrumentals, and plenty of laughs on the four and five string banjo. The show takes places on Sunday, September 10, at 1:00 pm.

Awakenings is at 208 Front Street in Owego, New York.

Blues Guitarist at Awakenings

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Harold Seils will perform at Awakenings Coffeehouse in Owego on Saturday, September 9. Harold plays blues style finger picking guitar and writes songs in a folk, blues, and spiritual style. Some of his favorites are: "Watch for the Opening, Grandmother's Journey, Passion, and Individuation Blues.

Doors open at 6:30, music plays at 7:30 and 8:30 pm. There is open seating; donations are accepted. Awakenings is at 208 Front Street in Owego, New York.

Play Yard Concepts Receives Grant Award

Play Yard Concepts Child Care Center has received a Grant Award of $7,000 from the Greater Broome Community Foundation. These funds will allow Play Yard Concepts to initiate renovations to its center in Apalachin to include a school-age child care program. Play Yard Concepts is a nonprofit center that is state licensed and presently provides low-cost quality child care for children 18 months to 5-years-old.

Harvest Dinner in Apalachin

A Harvest Dinner featuring turkey with all the trimmings will take place on Saturday, September 30, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the Apalachin United Methodist Church Cost is $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for seniors, $3.00 for children ages 6 through 12, free for children 5 years and younger. The dinner is sponsored by the Apalachin United Methodist Women. The church is at 303 Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin.

Rummage Sale in Newark Valley

A Rummage Sale will be held at the 1st Congregational Church, in Newark Valley, on Friday, September 15 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and on Saturday, September 16 from 9:00 am to Noon. A Bake Sale will be held Saturday morning. The church is on Main Street in Newark Valley.

Benefit Auction for Ed Ward

A Benefit Auction for cancer patient Ed Ward will take place on September 10 at 1:00 pm at the Warren Township Community Building in Pennsylvania. There will be a large auction, a Chinese Auction, Bingo, Car Wash, Bake Sale, BBQ, DJ, and more.

If you have anything you would like to donate call 247-7009 or 395-3558, or bring it to the Warren Township Community Building on September 9 or 10.

Irish Festival

Come to the Irish Festival on Sunday, September 10, on the grounds of St. Francis Xavier Church in Friendsville, Pennsylvania. The day starts with an 11:00 am Mass said by Father Jeffrey Paulish, pastor. The Irish Festival starts at 12:30 pm, rain or shine, and lasts until 7:30 pm.

The Irish Festival will feature The Irish Lads and Kilbrannon. There will be pub foods and Irish libations, games, Irish store, and Grand Prizes awarded. Admission is $5.50.
