New Hampshire Quarter Features Old Man of the Mountain

by Beverly Brown
The New Hampshire State Quarter is being released into circulation this month. It features "The Old Man of the Mountain" (the state's emblem), the phrase "Live Free or Die" (the state's motto), and nine stars.

The Old Man of the Mountain is a natural rock formation which, when viewed from the right angle, resembles the profile of an old man. The profile measures 40 feet from chin to forehead and is actually formed by five separate ledges of red granite jutting from a sheer cliff 1,200 feet above Profile Lake. The Old Man of the Mountain was discovered in 1805 and is in Franconia Notch State Park.

The words "Live Free or Die" were written by Revolutionary War hero General John Stark. His victory in the Battle of Bennington in August 1777 was a turning point in the war. In 1809, the veterans arranged a banquet to commemorate the battle. Stark was 81, and too ill to attend. But, in a letter to his former comrades, he wrote those famous words "Live Free Or Die; Death Is Not the Worst of Evils." In 1945 the New Hampshire legislature adopted "Live Free or Die" as the state's motto.

The nine stars represent New Hampshire's being the ninth state to enter the union.

The New Hampshire State Quarter is the ninth coin to be issued under the 50 State Quarters Program. The 10th quarter will honor Virginia (the 10th state to enter the union) and will be issued later this year.
