Citizens Police Academy Offered Again

The Owego Police Department is offering a Citizens Police Academy. The Owego Citizens Police Academy is a program that has been developed to enhance the relationship between citizens in the community and the police department. The goal of this academy is to educate citizens so they will have a better understanding of how their police department operates and become more aware of the responsibilities of a police officer. The course is structured to provide specific law enforcement related topics to those enrolled. It is designed to explain why and how police officers respond to given situations, and some of the restraints and guidelines they must follow.

Some of the course topics include patrol operations, crime scene investigations, defensive tactics, juvenile issues, penal law, domestic violence issues, and more. The academy is eight weeks, one day per week, two and a half hours per class.

To sign up, you can pick up an application at the Owego Police Department at 90 Temple Street in the Village of Owego. Classes will begin on Monday, April 24. There is no cost.

Tioga County residents are welcome, but depending on size of class, Owego residents will take precedence.
