Nichols Resident Wins 1st Place for Wood Carving

Bill Nolis, Jr., of Nichols, owner of Dunkin Donuts in Owego and Apalachin, won first place in the Novice Supportive All Species category at the 2000 National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) Grand National Wild Turkey Wood Carving and Sculpture Championship. Bill won with his exquisite wood carved peace pipe.

The winners were selected at the NWTF's 24th Annual Convention and Sport Show in Nashville, Tennessee, in February.

Sixty-six pieces of carved art were entered in ten categories with two division: Open and Novice. A variety of sculpted wild turkeys, songbirds, fish, and mammals were on display.

Entries were judged on craftsmanship, accuracy, essence of the species, and artistic workmanship.
