Annie's Corner by Anne O. Stout

Who Is Annie?

A few friends who know me have asked me who "Annie" is.

Well I really thought it was obvious, my child within of course. Therapists and books will tell you we all have one, and how well we deal with the child helps us better cope with life's situations. For instance, my inner child helps me better view the humorous side of life's little irritations. You know, like when you can't get the top off the childproof bottle, but your child does it for you.

Sometimes I get bogged down by the ups and downs, the chaos of being an adult, a parent, and a working person (yes, I have a job besides this one), and my inner child helps me to step back and laugh. Like when the neighbor's dog comes over and excites my dog so bad he knocks part of my laundry off the line.

Of course the child should not take over your life. That sneaky sales person would love to get a hold of the child within, and you'd be the proud owner of every video game ever invented.

Again some personalities restrain, chain down the child and never let he or she surface, and go through life quite grim and way-too-serious. Where does that get you? Even more gray hairs, (or no hair) more wrinkles, high blood pressure, ulcers, and all sorts of unfun stuff.

I like Annie! Oh, sure sometimes she pops out when not wanted and puts not one but both of my feet in my mouth, and even forces me to swallow, but no one is perfect.

Ashamed to admit it, but some days I think she is running me more then I am, like last April Fool's Day. Don't think my boss appreciated Annie's humor that day!

Okay, let me ask you, when is the last time you really let loose, did something crazy? No not something dangerous, safe yet insane. For instance, had a snow ball fight, wore two different shoes on purpose, pulled a practical joke, started singing on a crowded bus, threw a water balloon--you remember, just something goofy!

If you can't remember you're in trouble, and your inner child is probably bored to tears.

As for me, we're going out and have some fun!
