Sarah Macchiano Earns

Girl Scout Gold Award

Sarah Macchiano, daughter of Shirley and Angelo Macchiano of Apalachin, has completed requirements for Girl Scouting's top achievement, The Girl Scout Gold Award. This award recognizes a Senior Girl Scout's commitment to excellence as she develops skills and values to meet present and future challenges in her life.

To earn the award, Sarah had to prove her leadership ability by designing and carrying out a plan of activities that included community service, career exploration and specialized interest projects. Sarah completed a special Gold Award project to meet the requirements for volunteer community service. She planned and carried out a five week preschool summer reading program at the Apalachin Library incorporating crafts, stories, games, and songs for pre-readers. Apalachin Library Director, Gail Morrison, wanted to expand the existing summer reading program allowing the library to serve whole families. "Our goal was achieved. Sarah's program for the pre-readers promoted enthusiasm for books and a positive attitude towards the library," said Mrs. Morrison.

Sarah is in the 11th grade at Vestal High School. She serves in the Student Government as Vice President of the Junior Class. She is a member of the Honor Society, Vestal Athletes That Care, Youth Council Against Smoking, Varsity Club, Cross Country Team, and the Spanish Club. In addition to school activities, Sarah also teaches Religious Education and is a member of the Choir and the Senior Youth Group at St. Margaret Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Apalachin.
