Apalachin History Committee Preserves the Past

One goal of the Apalachin History Committee is to pass on their interest in our area's history to others, especially the younger generations. They have been invited to tell about scouting and early Apalachin to a Girl Scout Troop. They put together a presentation for Senior Citizens. The 2nd and 3rd grades at the Tioga Hills Elementary School invited the committee to make a presentation to their classes. The history committee was even invited back to see a video and spots written by students concerning both Apalachin and Broome County historical sites.

The Apalachin History Committee presented the book J. Alden Loring, A Naturalist Afield to the Apalachin Library. Written by William O. Lay, the book tells the story of an Owego reared naturalist who traveled the world collecting specimens of wildlife. His travels included a trip to Africa with Theodore Roosevelt.

The history committee also donated Hiawatha Island, Jewel of the Susquehanna by Emma Sedore. One other book which the committee thought would be of interest was Gays Gazeteer. This book is also in the library.

The Apalachin History Committee extends an invitation to attend their meetings on the last Friday on the month at 1:30 pm at the Apalachin Library on Main Street. If you have family histories, scrap books, or photos that you would like to share, they are interested in seeing them. If there is a program you would like to have explored and can guarantee enough attendance to accommodate a guest speaker, contact Jean Turner at 625-2485 or May Braman at 625-2135.

Previous guest speakers have given presentations on railroading, Endicott Johnson, and gravestones.
