Tioga United Way 2000 Campaign Kicks-Off
with Bike-a-thon

The Tioga United Way kicked off its 2000 campaign with the 3rd Annual Bike-a-thon on Saturday, September 18. This 24-mile challenge not only raised money toward the campaign goal, but also promoted community awareness for the beginning of the annual campaign. The Tioga United Way helps out member agencies that serve the entire county. Genevieve Mock, Publicity Chairman at Tioga United Way, coordinated the kick-off effort and was pleased at the support gained through the community in this celebration.

The 24-mile ride began at Marvin Park in Owego and challenged riders to bike along Route 17C to Barton and then return along the same route. The American Red Cross, which is a member agency, set up water stations along the route to support the bike-a-thon participants. The Open Door Mission was available to assist riders in distress and provided tables and chairs. The Tioga United Way hosted a tent along with activities for youth that drew support throughout the day-long event.

Member agencies were available to answer questions. These agencies included the Tioga County Boys & Girls Club, Waterman Conservation Center, the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Open Door Mission.

The Owego Police Department hosted a bike safety program for youth and a colorful bike parade and Minnow the Clown, who entertained the younger riders. Prizes were given to youths who completed a lap around Marvin Park were.

The United Way wishes to send a special thanks to Lockheed Martin Federal Systems-Owego, Binghamton Coca-Cola, Express Mart, and 434 Car Wash for generous donations that helped to make the event possible.

The Tioga United Way campaign will continue until November 10. This year's goal is to raise $264,167 to help support its member agencies.
