2nd Annual
Danny Short Golf Tournament

The 2nd Annual Danny Short Memorial Golf Tournament was held on May 22 at the Newark Valley Golf Course. The golf tournament is held in memory of Danny Short of Apalachin who passed away from leukemia in 1961 at the age of fourteen. The tournament is run by Danny's brother, Gary Short of Owego, and benefits families with sick children.

Proceeds from this year's tournament went to the Al Barrett family of Little Meadows, Pennsylvania. Al's daughter, eight-year-old Pia Barrett, has been battling leukemia on and off for the last four years. Pia is a very brave girl and has been through a long, hard fight which included two bone marrow transplants in Philadelphia. She has returned to school now for the last three weeks and is doing well at this time.

Gary Short and his wife, Lonnie, and daughter, Cindy, recently visited the Barrett family and presented them with a check for more than $900 which was made possible by all who participated in this year's golf tournament.

Like last year, the golf tournament was held at the Newark Valley Golf Course and transportation was provided by the Tioga Scenic Railroad. At 8:00 am, 68 golfers loaded their clubs on the train and were seated in two dining cars where a continental breakfast was served. After a beautiful, one-hour train ride, the golfers arrived at the course.

The weather was perfect and after an enjoyable round of golf that lasted until 1:00 pm, everyone boarded the train. While they were golfing, Steven and Sheryl May and the crew of the Tioga Scenic Railroad prepared a wonderful meal. As soon as everyone was in the dining cars, the meal was served and the train left Newark Valley for Owego.

When the meal was finished, everyone moved to an open air car where the prizes were given out. Sam Thomas of the Community Bank of Owego donated 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize plaques.

Gary Short, with the help of his brother, Tom Short, and nephew Fred Darrow, Jr. handed out prizes. Due to the generosity of the area merchants, there were very many door prizes and everyone had a great time.

Gary would like to thank some of these merchants who include: Shady Lawn Restaurant, Parkview Hotel, Mario's Pizza, Lenny's Family Restaurant, Tioga Sportsman's Inn, Tioga Scenic Railroad, Catatonk Golf Course, Scott Smith and Son, Inc., The Links Golf Course, Gas 'n' Goodies Stores, Sue's Diner, Spritz Hair Salon of Newark Valley, Phil's Chicken House, Honey Buns Restaurant, and the Nichols Golf Course.

Gary would like to give special thanks to the Tioga Scenic Railroad and crew for a very pleasant trip and a special thanks to Cleve Cleveland of the Newark Valley Golf Course for having the golfers back again this year and for all his help and for the prizes he donated to the tournament.

And a very special thanks to God for a safe trip and the beautiful weather.
