Correction Officer Terry Sinsabaugh - Triumphant Bar


CO Sinsabaugh is the Jail Training Officer and coordinated the training needed by the Correction Division to become eligible for accreditation. He also coordinated a great deal of the mandated training courses and assisted in assuring compliance of the jail with the Commission of Corrections 1500 minimum standards.

Deputy Sheriff Brent Dodge - Achievement Bar with Silver Star

Deputy Sheriff Dodge lead the road patrol with 48 DWI arrests for 1998.

Chief Dispatcher Steve DuVarney and Dispatchers Kelly Hopkins, Shellianna Decker, Liz Harris, Marietta Davis, Brian Cole, Chuck Allen, Grace Mistretta, Cliff Alexander, Todd Allis, and Wayne Searles - Achievement Bar

During 1998, the Communications Division overcame some major changes including the upgrade of radio system, the first full year of dispatching for the Waverly Police Department, the addition of the RUOK computer program and the start of the GIS Program. All dispatchers attended, completed, and passed the Emergency Medical Dispatcher Course and are now certified. The dispatchers worked short-handed during 1998 and put in many hours of over time.

Deputy Sheriff Wayne Moulton - Employee of the Quarter

As a result of Deputy Moulton's investigative ability, a response to a complaint of an illegally parked vehicle resulted in the arrest of seven illegal aliens.

Deputy Sheriff Brent Dodge - Certificate of Appreciation

While on routine patrol, Deputy Dodge offered a courtesy ride to a young man late at night. Through Deputy Dodge's interviewing skills, the young man divulged information regarding a series of unsolved larcenies and burglaries. This information was turned over to the Criminal Division and aided investigators in the arrest of three suspects.

Correction Sergeant Shawn Nalepa - Sheriff Accommodation Bar

CO Nalepa responded to an inmate disturbance in the B housing unit in the jail. Twelve 12 Federal inmates were involved in what could have been a violent confrontation. Sgt. Nalepa used outstanding communications skills and was able to talk the situation down without the use of force.

Deputy Sheriff Alan Bobier - Sheriff's Achievement Bar with Star

Deputy Bobier lead the Road Patrol Division with 111 field arrests and 441 traffic arrests.

Corrections Officers, Roy Schreiner, Linda Rought, Robert Spallone, Frank Lavor and Rob Vought - Certificates of Appreciation

These correction officers are the training officers for the Jail Division. During 1998, these officers did an outstanding job of guiding 17 new employees through the critical six-week jail training program.

Dispatcher Kelly Hopkins - Sheriff's Commendation Bar

Dispatcher Hopkins took a 911 call from a female caller reporting that her husband had accidentally shot himself in the head. Dispatcher Hopkins relayed emergency medical instructions to the caller and kept communications going between the caller until the ambulance and the Guthrie One Helicopter arrived. The subject was transported to the hospital and recovered.

Deputy Sheriffs Anthony Diles and Darryl Williams - Deputy of the Quarter Award

Deputy Diles and Deputy Williams investigated separate complaints of larcenies from cars in the Village of Candor. Their surveillance of the Candor High School parking led to the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect.

Lieutenant Richard Gorman - Sheriff's Medal of Commendation

Lt. Gorman was honored for his work with the Sheriff's Office's computer systems including upgrading the AS400, setting up and coordinating the RUOK Computer Program, working with he County Planning on the GIS Computer and Mapping System, upgrading the CIS Systems and insuring compliance for Y2K.

Deputy Sheriff Charles Scudiero - Certificate of Appreciation

Deputy Scudiero volunteered both his on- and off-duty time to perform the Neighborhood Watch Program.

Deputy Sheriff Jamie Burrell - Drug Buster Award with Silver Star

For the second year in a row, Deputy Burrell has lead the patrol division in drug interdiction arrests.

Correction Officer Linda Rought - Employee of the Quarter

CO Rought is a training officer for the division. She is always available to work extra when called and always carries out her duties in a professional manner.

Deputy Sheriff Timothy Jewell and Deputy Sheriff Rob Blaasch - Deputy of the Quarter Award

While conducting a routine traffic stop, Deputy Jewell and Deputy Blaasch went the extra step and discovered 4.5 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle resulting in a criminal position of a controlled substance arrest.

Sgt. Mort Engelbert, Sgt. Steve Ellis, Deputy Allen Bobier, Deputy Jamie Burrell Deputy Wayne Moulton, and Deputy Anthony Diles - Certificates of Appreciation

Deputies responded to a domestic dispute, which escalated into an armed barricaded suspect. They assisted the NYS Police with this investigation at the Colonial Garden Apartments in Owego an successfully terminated the investigation as the suspect fled and was captured as a result of vehicular intervention as the suspect tried to ram all pursuing patrol cars through a two-county pursuit.

Dispatcher Shellianna Decker - Sheriff's Commendation Bar

Sheriff's Deputies and NYS Police patrols responded to a 911 call of a man attempting to gain entry. The suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment with a shotgun, refused to come out, and wanted only to speak to Dispatcher Decker. She retained communications with the suspect, attempting to calm him down and to persuade him to peacefully surrender. She continued to work well into the next shift in an effort to resolve the standoff. The suspect was finally persuaded to come out, but after seeing police officers, he panicked and attempted to escape. He was eventually taken into custody with only minor injuries to law enforcement personnel. Dispatcher Decker was extremely instrumental in concluding this investigation without personal tragedy to all involved.

Deputy Sheriff Jamie Burrell - Commendation Bar with Star

Deputy Burrell is a K-9 officer and has used his K-9 Luger in numerous investigations. K-9 officers are often called upon to devote numerous personal hours in maintaining and training their K-9 partner.

WBNG TV Channel 12 - Plaque with the Samaritan Bar

WBNG is honored for acts of humanity in a time of crisis for the family of Investigator Lenny Jackson when Dan Jackson, Lenny's son, was diagnosed with Leukemia. WBNG supported the fund raising effort to help with Dan's medical expenses. In the end, WBNG ran a small tribute to Danny the night he died.
