Mom's Wit by Janet H. Brown

Doom and gloom are what I hear from reporters on the radio and TV. The front page of the newspaper (not this one of course) has the most horrific article to catch the reader's eye. It terrifies me to think I live in a world so full of tragedy.

I always wondered what was wrong with my parents. They were always watching the news on television. As a child growing up, I had more important things to do such as riding my bike, reading a good book, picking on my brothers, and talking on the telephone with my friends.

My daughter wanted to watch a video tape of hers and tried kick me off the couch. I told her she could wait to see her tape as I was in the middle of watching the world news. I couldn't believe it! I was now watching the news and sending my daughter off. Why do grown ups such as myself want to know what is going on in the world today? I pondered the idea for a while and this is what I came up with.

This is our world in which we live and everything that happens in it effects us. My daughter lives in her own little world, which of course isn't our world. I believe her biggest worry is planning her weekend with her friends. My son is too busy being a teenager, and asking for the car.

Our life would be a lot simpler if we could be young again. But who is going to be? There I go again, being a grownup.
