o see and to be seen are among the top priorities of a good driver. Winter provides many challenges to these objective. To increase your ability to see and be seen:

d Run the defroster on the front and rear windows while warming up your car.

d Keep your windshield washer fluid reservoir full. The top usually just pops off. You can use the end of a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the top off if necessary. Carry an extra gallon of windshield washer fluid for those days when all that road salt splashes up onto your windshield while driving.

d Try some window treatment. Although freezing rain sticks to glass under most conditions, window treatments work well for rain, frost, and light snow.

d Brush off your headlights and brake lights while clearing your windows. Use the snow brush side, because the scraper will scratch plastic lenses (and all painted surfaces). This will increase another driver's ability to see your car, as will the following tip.

d Check all your lights including high beams, reverse lights, hazard lights, and high mount brake lights.

Winter offers many driving difficulties, but some of the anxieties can be alleviated if visibility is considered a priority; both to see and to be seen.
