Goodbye, 1998, Let's Make 1999 "The Year of Heroes"

1998 was an interesting year: It brought us triumph and tragedy, smiles and tears, but most of all it brought us inescapable awareness that the century in which we have lived is coming to a close.

I'll miss the 20th Century. As I enjoy the seven quiet days between the last festive holiday of 1998 and the first sparkling holiday of 1999, I've been thinking about the stunning events that made this century memorable. We experienced two world wars and a host of smaller military conflicts; the computer utterly changed the way we live in society; telephones, television, movies, records, compact discs and videotapes entertained us; automobiles, reciprocating engine planes and jets gave us freedom of movement; microwave ovens and dishwashers made kitchen work easier for busy people; antibiotics and other new drugs brought some diseases to their knees, and the American economy rose and fell in a rhythmic dance that was both exhilarating and devastating. It was quite a ride.

The ride's not over yet -- not quite. We still have 1999 to experience before we plunge into the 21st Century. That's why it's so important for us to make the most of that last precious year. It will start in just a few days, and we'll have 365 brand new days to use as wisely as we can. The choice is ours, and we can either squander those days in pettiness, hatred and selfishness, or we can make the most of them by seeking out good in others, being a good friend, being honest and telling those we love how much they mean to use. It's up to us.

America has always loved heroes -- astronauts, teachers, scientists, and statesmen -- and we've always admired the characteristics that define them. They stood up for their beliefs and they worked to correct wrong where and when they found it. Many of them gave their lives for the things they knew to be important.

Let's make 1999 the Year of Heroes by doing our best to emulate the national and neighborhood heroes we admire. If we can bring some of their strengths into our lives, 1999 will be a good year. We can ring out the 20th Century with pride by striving to be heroes.

Have a wonderful New Year's holiday. 1999 will be a good year -- a Year of Heroes.
