Portable Cardiac Defibrillator Acquired by AFD

The Apalachin Fire Department/Emergency Squad was honored by the Prudential Insurance Company of America last month for acquiring a portable cardiac defibrillator through the Prudential Helping Hearts Program. The rescue squad received a $1,767 grant from Prudential to cover approximately half the cost of the defibrillation unit. The presentation took place at the Apalachin Fire Station.

The Prudential Helping Hearts Program is a matching grants initiative to help speed the acquisition of portable cardiac defibrillation units by volunteer rescue squads and fire departments. Defibrillators, which administer jolts of electricity to "reset" the heart's natural rhythm, have been called one of the most important lifesaving inventions of the 20th century.

Tom Ehret, a representative for Prudential Insurance in Endicott, addressed the squad members to praise them for their initiative.
