Painting Unveiling & Lecture

December 10, Thursday,7pm

Join in the unveiling of a recently restored work of important folk art. To highlight this gala unveiling, the TCHS will host a slide lecture on the work of Susa n Waters by noted art historian Richard Barons.

The portrait of Mr. H. T. Wells, by painter Susan Waters is newly conserved, and in a reconstructed frame. Susan Waters was an active itinerant painter, producing numerous portraits of citizens from Broome and Tioga Counties during the 1840s. Her work is now in collections ranging from the Tioga County Historical Society to the National Gallery of Art. This event is free and open to the public.

International Christmas Luncheon

December 18, Friday, 11:30am-1:30pm

Take a break from the rush of holiday shopping and sit down to an International Christmas Buffet. Sample foods from the cuisine of the French, Filipinos, North Americans, and Portuguese. Come try a Russian soup, Mid-Eastern salad, special Finnish breads, and an Italian dessert. Luncheon cost is $6 per adult, and $3 for children under 12. Reservations are not necessary. All proceeds go to support the museum's programming.

The museum will be decked out in holiday finery, with a special display of sleds, skates, sleigh bells, and other wintery objects.

Quilt Raffle

Now through May 1999

The Valley Quilters group of Newark Valley has made a generous donation of a hand-crafted quilt to be used for a fund-raising raffle. The quilt is made in the Log Cabin pattern with blue calicos. Chances on the quilt are available for $2 each, or 6 for $10. The drawing will be held on Saturday, May 29, 1999.
