Suggestions Sought for Developing River as Recreational Resource

Meetings Scheduled for Development Master Plan

The Town of Owego and the Tioga County Tourism Office are cooperating on a project to create a Master Plan for the county-wide development of the Susquehanna River as a recreational resource. The project is made possible by a local Waterfront Revitalization Program grant recently awarded to the town from the New York State Department of State.

The Master Plan Project will be managed by the Tourism Office and developed with the participation of municipal planners from all Tioga County river communities and interested organizations and residents. When completed, the plan will be used to apply for implementation funding from federal and state sources.

Two public meetings are scheduled for gathering input from river community residents to get suggestions and identify any issues and concerns that they may have. The first meeting will he held on Tuesday, November 10, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at the Chase Manhattan Bank, Front and Church Street, Owego, for residents of the Town and Village of Owego. The second meeting will be held on Thursday, November 12, from 9:30 to 9:00 pm at the Nichols Elementary School Gymnasium, Roki Boulevard, Nichols, for residents of the Town of Tioga, Nichols, Barton, and the Village of Nichols. A Waverly meeting will be scheduled at a later date.

This local Waterfront Revitalization Program Grant is awarded by the Department of State's Division of Coastal Resources, which administers Environmental Protection Fund grants available to local governments for revitalization programs including natural resource restoration, waterfront restoration, inter-municipal water quality improvements, and public education.
