Town of Owego

The Town Board voted to rezone the three parcels at Exit 66 in Apalachin from residential to highway interchange.

The Main Street Bridge in Apalachin will be posted at three tons until repairs can be completed.

The town board meetings have new times. Both will be at 7:00 pm on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Please also note the 7:00 pm start instead of 7:30.

Village of Owego

The Owego Fire Dept will be holding an award ceremony on June 24 to recognize volunteers with many years of service.

A two-year tree replacement program will be put in place on Lake Street to replace dead as well as overgrown trees.

A tentative 4% tax increase is expected in the 1998-99 village budget.

Memorial Day

Another year and another Village Memorial Day Parade has come and gone. Each year I ask "Where is everyone?" I would ask people to come down to the Memorial Service at the Courthouse next year. It is a very moving ceremony and a nice way to remember the people who helped provide the freedoms we enjoy today. The speaker was Joseph Brown, of Glen A. Warner Post 1371. His best quote for me was, "I don't want more people to vote, I want more people to know what they're voting for." With voters apparently willing to let the government erode their freedoms, I could not think of a more important point. Many soldiers died so that would not happen. We have the choice of if it was in vain.
