CARS ARE PILING UP ON ROUTE 38

Cars are piling up on Route 38, waiting for Ben Weitsman's new metal shredding processing plant to go into operation within the next several weeks. The plant is capable of shredding 200 tons per hour, which is the equivalent of 8-10 tractor trailer loads or 2 1/2 railroad car loads of scrap per hour. The plant will operate 10-12 hours per day, shutting down in the evening for routine maintenance. The metals are automatically separated by the machinery with minimal personnel involvement. This is the largest shredder in the Northeast. It will take products up to 120 inches wide - a school bus could go right up the conveyer and fit into the shredder. Weistman and Sons have been stockpiling material, moving it from their scrap yards in the Village of Owego and Binghamton. This material will be shredded during periods of low incoming scrap.
