Volunteers Honored

The Volunteer Action Center (VAC) of the Tioga United Way held a Recognition Event on February 26 to honor the volunteer efforts of community members. Those receiving awards were:

Jerry Henderson - The American Red Cross Southern Tier Chapter nominated Jerry for his dedicated efforts to Tioga County. He was the Disaster Chair for Tioga County and now is the Disaster Action Team Leader in the Tioga County region of the Southern Tier Chapter.

Henrietta Whitney - Apalachin Little Meadows Senior Citizens nominated Henrietta for her many hours she devotes to delivering food to the needy, visiting the shut-ins, helping at Waterman Center, and taking friends to the doctor.

Annette Andrews - Growing Years Children's Center nominated Annette who has given endless hours to both the board and staff. Her faithfulness, clarity of direction and thought, and excellent leadership have been valued and appreciated.

Esther Garey - Nichols Senior citizens nominated Esther for her volunteer work at the Food Pantry, bake sales, and daffodil sales for the Cancer Program, and for helping to fill needed offices for the club.

Kenneth Winters - Owego Little Leagues nominated Kenneth for over 20 years of dedication with OLL. He not only has helped coach, train, and mentor, but has given many hours of labor to the Building and Grounds Committee.

Kristina Henry - Seven Lakes Girl Scout Council nominated Kristina for her dedication to Girl Scouts. Through her work as a Girl Scout Leader, event organizer, encampment director, and now manager of the volunteers in the Spencer-Van Etten area, she is the driving force behind the great program that is being provided to girls in that area.

Sandra Blackwell - SOS Shelter nominated Sandra who co-facilitates the "House Meetings" every Wednesday at the Shelter. She is helpful to the residents who are victims of domestic violence and is compassionate and caring about their situation. She helps to arrange food drives in the schools.

Janice W. Arion - Spencer Senior Citizens nominated Janice who has given dedicated efforts over several years to the Spencer Club. She has taken charge of many of the printing that was needed for the club. She is active in the "Released Religious education" project in Spencer.

Howard Hyatt - Tioga Center Senior Citizens nominated Howard who is ready and willing to do most anything that he can for the club. He helps in support of the Tioga United Way during campaign time.

Charles "Chuck" Sibley - Tioga County Boys & Girls Club nominated Chuck who has been a coach, mentor, and role model for many years. His continual unselfish giving to the youth of the community exemplifies the spirit and intent of volunteerism.

Roselie Golanka - Tioga County Open Door Mission nominated Roselie who has given many hours every week at the Mission Store. She has also volunteered for the Red Cross as a nurse.

Gene Miller - Fred L. Waterman Center nominated Gene who has volunteered at the center for more than 10 years by doing woodworking, carpentry, and teaching. Nearly all of Waterman's educational exhibits were designed by him.

Carol Beebe - VAC Hats and Mittens Committee nominated Carol who has volunteered for more than two years. Last year she made over 200 hats and mittens which were given out at the Christmas Party that the Open Door Mission sponsors for the youth in Tioga County.

Jerry Pierce - VAC Computer Committee nominated Jerry who has given endless hours to fixing up computers for Tioga Center Schools and for the Owego Police department and the county jail.

The VAC also recognized the volunteer efforts of Lockheed Martin Federal Systems, Stackmore, and Hadco.
