No Sales Tax on Clothing

January 17-23 There will be a tax-free clothing week in Tioga County January 17 through January 23, 1998.

The State of New York is waiving its 4% sales tax on clothing selling for under $500 per article. The state also allows counties and cities within New

York State to exempt their local portion of sales tax.

The Tioga County Legislature waived the 3.5% of the local portion of sales tax on clothing and footwear purchases up to $500.

Is The State Discriminating Against Businesses?

It's nice to have two weeks a year with no sales tax on clothing and footwear, but what about other types of merchandise? It would be nice to have no sales tax on power tools, dining out, electronics, hairstyling, boats, auto repair or how about automobiles! Come on, state legislators, stop discriminating against non-clothing businesses, give the rest of us a break.
