Free Celtic Christmas Concert in Owego

Aengus, a new group consisting of three of the most respected musicians in the Irish music world - Robbie O'Connell, Jimmy Keane and Kathleen Keane - presents a special Christmas concert on Saturday, December 20, at 8:00 pm, at the Owego-Apalachin Middle School in Owego.

This celebration of the mid Winter season has a distinct Celtic flavor and extends from the little known Kilmore carols of County Wexford to the Irish-American vaudeville stage. They explore both the Christian and Pagan traditions surrounding the Winter solstice in a mixture of songs and instrumental pieces.

Robbie O'Connell - singer, songwriter and guitarist - was born in Ireland and is the nephew of the famous Clancy Brothers, with whom he frequently tours. In addition to touring with Aengus, Robbie pursues a solo career and also sings with Liam Clancy and his son Donal Clancy.

Jimmy Keane was born in London of Irish-speaking parents. He has won five consecutive all-Ireland titles on the accordion. The Anchorage Daily News said "Even those predisposed to burn accordions on sight were amazed at the power, beauty, and originality of his playing."

Kathleen Keane (no relation to Jimmy Keane) was born in Chicago to parents from County Galway, Ireland. She has won numerous awards for her performances on tin whistle, flute, fiddle, and button accordion.

The concert is sponsored by the Tioga County Council on the Arts (TCCA), and is the second in their Master Series Concert. Free tickets are still available at the TCCA office at 181 Front Street (2nd floor), Conti Jewelers, Awakenings, and the Hand of Man.
