School Tax Relief Program

On August 7, 1997, Governor Pataki signed into law the New York State School Tax Relief (STAR) program which provides an exemption from school taxes for owner occupied, primary residences.

Eligible senior citizens may receive reduced school taxes under the "enhanced" STAR exemption for the first time for school year 1998-99. To be eligible, property owners must be 65 years of age or older, with incomes that do not exceed $60,000 a year.

The Area Agency on Aging, in conjunction with the Tioga Department of Real Property, will present an informational meeting regarding STAR on Thursday, November 13, at 10:00 am, at the Countryside Community Center, 9 Sheldon Guile Blvd., Owego. Doug Barton, Director of the Department of Real Property, will discuss STAR and other property tax exemptions for our senior population. Applications for enrollment will be available. Be sure to bring your latest federal or New York State income tax returns, in addition to proof of age.

Space is limited, so can the Area Agency on Aging at (607) 687-4120 by November 10 to reserve a seat.
