Chamber Supports I-86 Initiative

The Board of Directors of the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce has expressed strong support for the re-designation of New York State Route 17 to Federal Interstate 86.

It is felt that this initiative is clearly appropriate -- especially in view of the fact that approximately 90% of this highway already meets interstate standards and currently carries three times as much traffic as I-88 which runs from Binghamton to Albany.

It is the chamber's belief that the conversion of Route 17 to a federal interstate highway would help to insure the continued growth and revitalization of not only our community, but also all of New York's Southern Tier region. Benefits would include an increased potential for attracting the interest of businesses and developers along this roadway and an even greater volume of commercial and tourist traffic.

Chamber President Receives National & International Recognition

Dr. Joan A. Englehart, President of the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce, has been nominated as an "International Woman of the Year" by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England.

She has also earned inclusion in the 1997-1998 edition of "Who's Who of American Women," a guide to 28,000 of today's most influential women.

Dr. Englehart recently completed five years on the Board of Directors of the Tioga County Rural Ministry and served as the first chairman of the Ministry's Board of Directors. She was given an award for outstanding leadership at the organization's recent annual meeting.

She is a member of the Broom-Tioga-Tompkins Private Industry Council, is a vice chairman of the Tioga Community Revitalization Task Force, president of the Tioga County Unit of the American Heart Association, a member of the School-to-Careers Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of the Southern Tier World Commerce Association, member of the Southern Tier Rail Mergery Advisory Committee, the Tioga Advisory & Action Council for Tourism and its long Range Planning Committee and a member of the Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study (BMTS).
