Walking Tour

Hotels and Theatres

August 16, Saturday, 11am

From the earliest days, travelers have needed a place to stay, and residents have needed entertainment. Local historian and author Emma Sedore has begun work on a second book looking at the hotels and taverns of our area, and the events which went on there. She will lead a tour past some of the sites of downtown hospitality and entertainment. Tickets are available at the museum. Cost is $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members. This is the last walking tour. In case of heavy rain, the tour will be held the next day.

Summer Fun Workshops

Through August 21,

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10am-Noon

A series of summer programs for children ages 6-12. Program fees are $5 for TCHS members, $6 for non-members. The workshops combine learning about the past with play. Games, crafts activities, and historic skills are part of the series.

August 5, Music and Dance - Children will craft a number of musical instruments - kazoo, bongo drum, and more - then play some traditional music games, and learn dances from long ago.

August 7, Toys and Storytelling - The magic of storytelling fills this day with word games and writing skills. Children will learn about early toys and make some of their own.

August 12, Toy Boats - Children will explore toy and model boats in the museum and build their own from household materials.

August 14, River Lore - The children will hear stories of Tioga County river lore, sing river songs, and float toy boats

August 19, Iroquois Stories and Games - Children find out about New York's earliest residents by playing some of their games, hearing the story of the corn husk doll, and crafting one of their own.

August 21, Iroquois Food and Village Life - Children will prepare and taste a variety of Iroquois foods, and discover more about early Iroquois life-styles through food, festivals and the use of plants.

TCHS Wants Your Stuff!

The Tioga County Historical Society is planning another yard sale for this fall and is looking for quality items to sell as a fund raiser for museum events.

If you are able to donate books, antique objects, or quality wares, please contact Joann Lindstrom at 687-2460. (No clothing, please!) The society will arrange for pick up and delivery if you need help. All proceeds from this fund raising event will support museum services and programs. Clean out the attic, and support your Historical Society at the same time! Donations are tax deductible.
