Apalachin Girl
Scouts Earn Gold Award
Jeanne Fallon and Kim Purtell of Apalachin are two of 18 Girl Scouts
honored last month for earning the organization's highest award, the Girl
Scout Gold Award. Both are seniors at Owego Free Academy. The honors
were bestowed in a special ceremony in Watkins Glen.
Among a host of other accomplishments, to earn the Girl Scout
Gold Award, the girls must spend 65 hours planning and executing a service
project that has a lasting effect on a community.
In an effort to get people in her community outdoors and moving around,
Fallon created health walks of various lengths, at various locations for
her Gold Award project. These walks were mostly wheelchair, stroller, and
pet friendly, so that all ages, and all abilities could participate.
Fallon heads to SUNY Oneonta to study computer art and hopes to entertain
audiences by working in the movie industry.
Purtell, a senior at Owego Free Academy, worked with the
Countryside Community Center in Owego to design and build three-feet tall
flower boxes. These boxes are tall enough to allow the elderly residents
to enjoy their love of gardening without having to bend over to the ground.
Since the boxes are located outside, it gives residents an opportunity
to enjoy the nice weather and take care of flowers. She will attend Broome
Community College in the fall and hopes to teach math or science and perhaps
open her own bakery.
