As a result of the 2006 flood, it was necessary to move the Tioga County Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to a temporary location.  No county-owned space was available at that time, so the county entered into a three-year lease for space in the Price Chopper plaza, at a total cost of just under $50,000 per year.   This lease expires this fall.  

 At the beginning of this year, the county kicked off a study to determine if the DMV should remain at its current location in the plaza or move elsewhere.  Several alternative locations were considered, including county-owned locations as well as locations not owned by the county. The financial implications (cost vs. savings) of each possible alternative were analyzed as well as other considerations such as convenience, accessibility, etc.  The results of this study were presented to the legislature with the recommendation that the DMV be moved back to the County Office Building at 56 Main Street

 Considering that this recommendation is the least costly, yields the greatest savings (more than $50,000 per year, which will be used to offset taxes), in the least amount of time (one year), the legislature voted unanimously to proceed with this alternative.   

 The other "pros and cons" associated with this alternative are: it is handicapped accessible (pro), it is less convenient for some (con), it does not offer as much parking as the plaza (con).  

 The legislature felt that saving $50,000 per year far out-weighed the negative impacts of this alternative.   Therefore, the county is moving forward with the plan to move the DMV to the County Office Building.
