Some Observations from the Hill
by H. H. "Hub" Brown

Perhaps I should say "From Glenmary Drive" for that's where I am living now.

A lot has happened since I wrote last. Sadly, I have to report the loss of my dear grandson, John Legge. I think because John was the grandchild that we lived nearest to and so saw the most frequently,  and because he was always such a good natured little tike that he'll always stay in my memory.

When we lived where Pat and Fritz live now, our youngest daughter and her husband, Everett Legge,  lived next door with their three kids, Tom, Monica, and John. The two youngest kids would pull a pen out of my pocket and ask me to draw a picture of a horse or dog on the palm off their hand. I had got into the habit of stopping in to see them before I went on home and changed clothes and then started doing chores. One day, after I had finished their drawings, Monica jumped up and dashed into the bathroom. I wondered why all the hurry and so went in to see. She had a washcloth and was scrubbing her hand as hard as she could. And then I remembered that the day before she had asked me to have the horse running and I had forgotten and left him standing.

I had quite an experience here a short time ago. I have a grandson, Rob, who lives in Stamford, CT, but works in New York and had gotten acquainted with two different eye doctors and in conversing with them had mentioned my case of Macular Degeneration and wondered if there was anything that could be done for it. So they each gave him an appointment for me to come and see them.

So on Tuesday, my granddaughter Karen who lives in Odessa, New York, drove to Owego and picked me up and took me to Rob's house. The next morning we drove to the station and took a train 40 miles into New York.

First we visited a regular eye doctor who tested my eyes and after finding a lens
that would help my right eye for I was born with my left eye being what they call a lazy eye, I could never read with that eye, he gave me a prescription for a lens for my right eye. Since then, Jim took me to see Bruce at the Binghamton Optical here in Owego and he will furnish me with a lens that is supposed to aid me in reading.

When we started to go to this doctor's office, both Rob and Karen said to me, "Are you sure you don't want a wheelchair?" for I had only been walking short distances in physical therapy. And they would show me a landmark and ask "Can you walk to there?" and I would assure them that I could. And then when we reached that place, they would show me another and I would tell them, "Sure I can go that far." And when it ended we had walked seven New York City blocks.

When we reached the second doctor's office, he took numerous pictures with different lights and at different angles and we showed them to Bruce when we got back.

When it came lunch time we went up to the 35 floor of the Glass Tower. There we were surprised for there was my great-granddaughter Sarah to join us for lunch. Her long hair blended nicely with the long lines of her dress. One can easily see that this would make a good ad for the store that she works for. She also informed us that she prefers to be called Holland. This suits me as that is my middle name. Sarah Holland was my Dad's mother's maiden name, she came from Ireland.
