Info Needed for Memorial Day

 Memorial Day 2009 actions need input from readers. Contact Jim Raftis VFW Post 1371 Memorial Day Chairman at 687-4229 or email jraftis2@stny.rr.com. 
Fallen Heroes 

 There are 165 fallen heroes from Iraq, Vietnam, Korea, WWII and WWI on the Tioga County Memorial. Families and friends are asked to identify home community and write a profile of each for the Tioga County Fallen Hero Book of Remembrance. 

65th D-Day Anniversary
 Families are asked to identify living and deceased veterans of D-Day June 6, 1945. 

Overseas Cemetery 
 Erwin Flohr bought and placed roses on the graves of four Tioga County fallen heroes in Margraten, Netherlands, American Cemetery. Remembered on Sunday, March 29, were Glenn A. Warner, Edward E. Whalen, Walter R. Magee and Richard Hoyt. 

 Flohr plans to revisit Henri-Chapelle Cemetery in Belgium. He's adopted the grave of Army Pfc. James M LaDue of Tioga County. He was killed in action Sept. 29, 1944, and was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. Please share what else you know about this fallen hero.  

Share Your Stories
 Owego-Apalachin Middle School Social Studies students will have a Teach In Day before Memorial Day. Veterans and others who were involved in or affected by the wars are asked to share their personal stories. Veterans are invited to sign up. Schools may also register their interest.   

Arlington National Cemetery 
 Identify veterans and/or their relatives who are buried in Arlington National Cemetery. 

POW/MIA 
 What living or deceased veterans were Prisoners of War or Missing in Action. 
Buddy Poppy Inspirational 

 Churches are providing names of servicemen/women for whom they are praying to the Owego VFW Post 1371 Junior Girls Auxiliary. They're preparing a Buddy Poppy Inspirational Display with the theme "Devotion to God and Country." The display will be judged at their statewide competition on Friday, April 17, in Dunkirk.
