Some Observations
from the Hill
by H. H. "Hub" Brown Well, last month they had me so busy down at Tioga Health Care
that I didn't get a chance to write anything and, to tell the truth, I
wasn't in a writing mood even if I had been able to sit up and use my typewriter.
I really don't know if
Started out that I had two toes that I hadn't gotten out of the
way when I closed
Before that date, I woke up one morning and couldn't seem to get enough air to breathe right. My son, Jim, called Packer and the doctor there said to bring me right down. The doctor said I had pneumonia so I was in the right place. After they cured the pneumonia, they sent me to Elderwood, their nursing home, and put me in their physical therapy program so I had exercise every day to build up my strength. Right now I'm spending nights with Jim and Bernie and get to visit my home day times. I often think of how proud Frank was to be Polish. Once he bought Glen Mary, the nursing home, and went into business, he knew that his long Polish name would confuse some of the local residents, so he had his name legally changed to Michaels. He said back then the place was grown up with weeds and good sized saplings. He had been brought up in the city so knew nothing about the farm machinery he needed to help clear the place. In fact, he said he learned his numbers by shooting craps in Scranton as a boy. His father had never attended school so was unable to read or write thus was never able to get a good job. But Frank said his father was a precise carpenter and had taught himself to play the clarinet just from listening to music so he could play at picnics and parties. Around this same time, his brother Stanley had gotten acquainted with the owner of an already famous joint called "Sloppy Joe's" in Key West. Through fishing and partying together, this man had gotten to like Stanley and made him an offer. After a small down payment, Stanley could pay for the place out of profits. This was agreed to by both parties and that's how Stanley became owner of one of the most famous places in Florida, for everyone had to be able to say they had been to Sloppy Joe's. I've heard since that Stanley sold the place and the present owners wanted to syndicate the place.
