Local Theater
Group Celebrates 50 Years
During the opening of its 50th season in October 2008, the Ti-Ahwaga Community Players sold their 30,000th theater ticket since moving into their own space at 42 Delphine Street seven years ago. The lucky ticket purchaser, Mrs. Beverly Arbes, is shown above accepting her gift. The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players are celebrating their 50th anniversary with revivals of plays from past decades, beginning with the first play presented fifty years ago, the comedy Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward. The four other plays to be shown this season are A Christmas Story in December 2008, Nunsense in Jan./Feb 2009, Rainmaker in March/April 2009 and Oklahoma in May/June, 2009. For over 40 years, the Ti-Ahwaga Community Players - which is the oldest continuously performing community theater group in upstate New York - presented its plays at various local venues such as the Elks Auditorium, the Treadway Inn, the Owego Historical Society Museum, and school auditoriums. In the spring of 2001, with widespread support from the community, NYS grants, and local foundation grants, the group opened its own doors in a renovated warehouse at 42 Delphine Street (a left turn after the underpass on North Avenue). A gala celebration is planned on March 7, 2009, with food, drink, and a "Walk Down Memory Lane" with musical numbers from past performances and a limited live auction of very special items. Mark your calendars and check out the web site at www.tiahwaga.com, or call 687-2130.
