Veterans Day Ceremony in Owego
Veterans
Day commemorates the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month as a moment
the "war to end all wars" ended. After World War II Armistice Day became
Veterans Day and designated as a day to remember all of the nation's veterans
who answered their country's call.
Owego's Veterans Memorial Committee asks
all veterans and citizens to attend the traditional Veterans Day 2008 ceremonies
at 11:00 am, Tuesday, November 11, at the Tioga County Veterans Memorial
on the south lawn of the Tioga County Courthouse.
On this Veterans Day, honor our returning
heroes, many of whom have been wounded in mind, body, or spirit.
No matter where you are on Veterans Day,
the important thing is to pause, reflect, remember, and thank and recognize
the veteran. Remembering gives true meaning to sacrifice and service.
Veterans Invited to OAMS Classroom
Owego-Apalachin Middle School (OAMS) Social
Studies Teacher Michael Bartlow and his students invite veterans to their
classrooms to speak about their wartime or peacetime service and the meaning
of Veterans Day on Monday morning, November 10.
Families are encouraged to insist that
veterans from Iraq, Afghanistan, the Gulf War, Vietnam, Korea, and World
War II as well as peacetime service "report for duty."

Veterans Flag Holder Cemetery Survey
Volunteers are still needed to survey some
cemeteries in Tioga County to find out how many graves of veterans require
holders for the U.S. flag.
While at the veteran's grave, volunteers
are asked to copy the military data inscribed on the veterans marker located
behind the gravestone or flat in the ground.
The objective is to complete the survey
before the end of November 2008. If you or your organization is interested
in this community project, please contact Jim Raftis 687-4229 or email
jraftis2@stny.rr.com.
This information is being put in a data
base by volunteer Anita Harding. It will be given to cemetery officials,
the Tioga County Veterans Service Agency and used for "Roll Call" on Memorial
Day.
