Recently, Mrs. Penney and I attended what was to have been a candidates' debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Because only Barbara King for state and Dick Huttleston and Don Burns for county offices were there, the session turned into a question and answer period.

There was general agreement that our county's most valuable asset was the willingness of people to help each other. There was also a general concern about the dangers imposed by gas drilling.

The hope was expressed for the future that urban renewal might evolve rather than urban spread, that open space might be preserved, and that improvements might be made in solid waste management and in reducing farm waste runoff.

I found the speculation about possible future transportation especially interesting. I remember that many years ago Ray Ward, then the director of the chamber of commerce, proposed a regional airport in the town of Spencer to be connected by rapid rail lines to major cities.
