Giant
Pumpkin Auction
On October 4, the 4-H Giant Pumpkins were auctioned off at Stoughton Farm in Newark Valley, New York. Youth participating in the Giant Pumpkin Project had been raising their pumpkins since April and their final activity was to auction the pumpkins off to the highest bidder. The Grand Champion Pumpkin, raised by Colton Lounsbury, weighed in at 96 lbs and was purchased by Ward & Van Scoy Inc., Owego, New York. The 4-H Pumpkin Project participants raised a total of 13 pumpkins ranging in weight from 18 to 96 lbs and sold for an average price of $30.00 a piece. The 4-H Giant Pumpkin Project would like to thank all those who supported the return of this very exciting and educational activity. We thank Tim and Debbie Stoughton of Stoughton Farm, Newark Valley, New York, for providing a venue for our auction; Frank Wiles of Our Green Acres, Owego, New York for his expertise and advise in getting our youth started in the growing of giant pumpkins; Jim Mead, Owego New York, for his engaging role as auctioneer on October 4th; and Charlie Davis of The Ithaca Dirt Riders for the use of their tent on auction day.
