Recently the county legislature was called into emergency session by the county attorney. Upon his request, we concurred in having a public hearing in time to place the establishment of an office of county comptroller as an issue on the ballot for the next general election. Although I am not in favor of creating this position, I agreed to let the voters decide.

 Although the public hearing was held at ten in the morning, there were about twenty people attending. Only four of them spoke but all four were against the proposal. These four seemed to question the hurried sequence in setting up the proposal as well as the proposal itself.

 Most seemed to feel, as do I, that the position of elected county treasurer ought to be enough. We don't need a college graduate with an accounting degree. Anyone who can read a financial statement is able to do the job.

 In the immediately following special meeting of the legislature there was a spirited discussion but I was the only one opposed to creating the new position. Again I heard it said that the county "ought to be run like a business." To this I would reply that a businessman usually supplies his own capital.
