Community Service
Did you know that the Apalachin Lions Club
has been maintaining a small park at the corner of Main Street and Route
434 in Apalachin? The Lions have been taking care of the park for more
than 20 years. They cut the grass, keep the flag flying, and keep the park
lighted at night. At Christmas, they decorate the tree with lights.
A few years ago, the Apalachin Garden Club
asked for help in cutting the grass at the small park on the other corner
across from the Lions park. The Lions also took this on. This is
one small part of the service the Apalachin Lions do for our community.
Back To School Program
The Apalachin Lions Club has just completed
its 19th Annual Back to School Program. This year's program cost $2,460,
and served 21 families with 41 school age children. The Back
to School Program gives each child selected a $60 gift certificate good
for school supplies or clothing at a local store. The program was instituted
when the Apalachin Lions realized that many children do not look forward
to returning to school in the fall because they could not afford new clothing
and thus felt conspicuous compared to most other students who typically
purchase one or more new outfits.
The club uses previous lists, as well as
any new families it has assisted during the past year, primarily on its
Christmas Basket program, to generate the list of students that may require
aid. Each student's need is verified each school year and all students
K-12 who qualify return to school a little bit happier and more confident
that they will fit in.

in two local schools. Students ages 11 through 13 are eligible to participate.

or sketch their interpretation of the theme. The deadline is October 12.
