Yankees Take Part in Cooperstown Tournament

The Apalachin Yankees, made up of 12 boys from Endicott, Owego, Susquehanna Valley, Vestal, and Waverly, competed against teams from across the country at the Baseball World Tournament held July 26 through 31 in Cooperstown. The other 24 teams at the tournament came from various states, including California, Illinois, Florida, Kentucky and Washington. The Yankees were the only New York team in this tournament. During the week-long tournament, the Yankees participated in skills competitions, played games each day against other participants, stayed in college dormitories and toured the Baseball Hall of Fame, where several of them had the opportunity to shake hands with Yogi Berra and Goose Gossage. The Apalachin Yankees successfully beat Northwest Timberjacks (Seattle, WA), Florida International Baseball Academy, Amity Spartans (Connecticut), Amity Hurricanes (Connecticut), and Hoffman Heat (Illinois). The team made it to the semi-final rounds where they lost against Long Beach Demons from California. Cooperstown Baseball World, founded in 1999, is owned and operated by Eddie Einhorn, owner of the Chicago White Sox. Players were chosen for the Apalachin Yankees,
