Fire Department
Chief's Corner
School Bus and Traffic Safety
The summer months wind down to the glorious
blaze of autumn leaves, the sounds of honking geese trekking back to the
sunny south, and large yellow vehicles filled with eager beginners. No,
not the new recruits to the Fire Department; schoolchildren learning to
safely wait for, and cross to the bus. Just like our new members here,
there is a learning curve in any new skill, so won't you please be extra
careful to watch for darting youngsters around the side of the street?
Of course as always, it is illegal, as well as just plain mean, to pass
a school bus with its flashing red lights displayed. Thanks for helping
to protect our most vulnerable citizens.
Heat Safe and Smart
With cold weather starting early this year,
as soon as possible would be the best time to check your heating appliances.
Having your boiler or furnace checked by a reputable serviceman will
not only mean you will get the most bang for your heating fuel buck, it
will help to safeguard you against those expensive insurance claims for
a fire. If you are planning on using a wood stove, the chimney needs to
be checked and cleaned a minimum of once a year; it's also suggested it
be cleaned whenever needed throughout the heating season. A professional
chimney cleaner is a good investment, probably far less than the donation
you would make to the Emergency Squad if things went badly for you on the
roof.
Training
Garry Archer and Joe Morrison have completed
the NYS Fire Police Class. After being sworn in, they will be legally empowered
as Peace Officers. Good work, guys!
New Deliveries
On September 2, the two new ambulances
will be delivered to the Department. This is the culmination of a three-year
process, and is part of our department's commitment to the community we
serve. By replacing vehicles on a timely schedule, we can actually limit
costs for repair of aging trucks, while providing the highest standards
of care to our patients.
One of our members had a special delivery
on July 24. EMT/Firefighter Michael McLenon and his wife Michelle welcomed
our newest future firefighter, Patrick Braden McLenon, into the world.
We look forward to welcoming him into the department!
Fire Prevention
October is Fire Prevention Month, and the
week of October 6-11 is Fire Prevention Week. Every fire department in
the nation has the responsibility of educating the members of the community
they serve on fire prevention and life safety. We will be having special
events throughout the month, including tours of the station and trips to
the local schools to spread the news to our youngsters.
Watch this space for other exciting happenings.
As always, if you think helping out with any of these activities fit your
style, please stop by Station 1 any Wednesday evening and talk to us about
joining.
