BPW Awards Scholarships
The Owego Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW) is proud to announce the six young ladies who received BPW regular high school scholarships this year. In order to be selected for a scholarship the candidate must meet certain academic, civic, and community activity requirements as well as be accepted in a college business or management program. The Owego BPW supports all six high schools in Tioga County. The scholarship recipients are: Caitlyn Kafka of Candor School District, who will be going to Broome Community College continuing in Liberal arts; Elizabeth Coghill of Owego Free Academy, continuing to Elmira College as a history major; Kaitlyn Watson of Newark Valley High School, attending Southern Connecticut University to study business; Miranda Srnka of Spencer VanEtten District, continuing at Texas A&M University for business; Jodi Foust of Tioga Central School, continuing at TC3 in Cortland for social work; Janeen Lamontagne of Waverly Central High School, continuing at SUNY Purchase in psychology. Owego BPW created two additional one-time scholarships in memory of members who passed away this past year, awarded to two students of Owego Apalachin School. To honor Mary Mead who was a charter member of Owego BPW the student of Cosmetology chosen was Heather Long. To honor Barbara Fink long time member of BPW the student continuing their education in the field of education chosen was Courtney Carlson. Owego BPW is currently searching for young women in high school to participate in a youth leadership program this October. Each fall young women throughout New York State attend this conference. The Youth Leadership Program is a weekend seminar, which challenges high school girls to consider different career options, by offering workshops, networking and mentoring. Young women learn leadership skills and have fun, too. Participants will be out of town for a weekend in the Hudson Valley and must agree to certain behavior guidelines. In order to be considered for participation, a girl must be a junior or senior in a high school in Tioga County, NY. The Owego BPW will provide transportation and lodging. Email kath29@virtualforum.com for additional information on this program or to become a member of this organization.
