OFD Wins Central Races
The Owego Fire Department Hose Teams placed first and fourth at the Central New York Firematic Hose Races at the 115th Annual Central New York Firemen's convention held in Whitesboro, NY, on July 20. 
     Owego's Susquehanna Hose Company #1 won the overall points title winning first places in the ladder, wye, and straight lay hose competitions with a total of 15 points. 
     Owego's Hiawatha Engine #4 finished fourth overall in the competition.  
     Company #1 defended its title from last year winning its second leg of Overall Points Trophy donated in memory of fallen Owego Firefighter Steve Gavin.  Three legs are required to retire the trophy.  
     "We pulled out another win this year with a solid performance by our hydrant man Bill Herwerth," said team co-captain Lou Striley. "Billy really came through for us." 
     Team members included Herwerth, Striley, Rick Hinchcliffe, Patrick Gavin, Tim Gavin, Danny Gavin and coach David Franz. 
     This year marked the 30th anniversary that Franz, Hinchcliffe, and Striley have participated at the event.    
     Firematic hose races are timed events where firefighters test their skills. Teams of five members must connect nozzles to hoses, hoses to hoses, and hoses to the fire hydrant, and knock down targets in the quickest time in the ladder, wye, and straight lay competitions. Hose races improve basic firefighting skills.  
     The Central New York Firemen's Convention will be held in Owego in 2010.
