Needed on Korean War KIA/MIA from Tioga County
Eight Tioga County soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the Korean War are etched on the Tioga County Korea War Memorial in Courthouse Square. Tioga County may have to add five more honored names. A Korea War Casualty List identified them as having lived in Tioga County. If you know one of the thirteen fallen soldiers, especially the five new heroes, please contact Owego VFW Post 1371 Memorial Day Chairman Jim Raftis jraftis2@stny.rr.com or 687-4229. Five new names are: Sgt. Leonard Hull, Pvt. Richard Galpin of Newark Valley, Pfc. Elmer Barton of Town of Barton and Lansing, Cpl. Richard Henderson Jr. and Sgt. James Martin of Waverly. Two died while captured as prisoners of war, one died while missing, and two were killed in action. Engraved on the Tioga County Korea War Memorial are Pfc. Robert Burke, Pfc. Raymond Short of Owego, Pfc. Franklin Holdridge of Waverly, Pfc. David Card, Pfc. John Lisenby of Nichols, Pvt. Norman Briggs of Newark Valley, A2c John Maslin of Lockwood and Pfc. Raymond Weaver of Nichols. One died in a plane crash and is missing, one died of wounds, and six were killed in action.
