Apalachin
Library Granted Provisional Charter
On May 20, 2008, The New York State Board of Regents granted the Apalachin Library a provisional charter to operate as an association library. Since 1957, the Apalachin Library has been providing library services to the Apalachin community and residents in the Town of Owego, operating, most recently, as a Reading Center of the Finger Lakes Library System. As an association library, it is now eligible for state and federal library grants, state funding through FLLS, and other private sources not available to Reading Centers. According to the charter, the Library is governed by a Board of Trustees of the Apalachin Library Association, which oversees the operations and finances of the library. The initial trustees are Connie Fischer, Janet Hogan, Tony Poole, Naomi Rupright and Fred Strauss. The board Meets the third Monday of each month, at 7:00 pm, in the Apalachin Library Meeting Room, 719 Main Street in Apalachin. All meetings are open to the public. The Friends of the Apalachin Library, which served as the de facto library board for the past 50 years, continues to exist as a community advocacy organization, conducting fund raising to support the Library and its mission. For more information on the Library, becoming a Library Trustee, or joining the Friends of the Apalachin Library, contact Cathy Sorber, Library Director, at 625-3333.
