Observations from the Hill
by H. H. "Hub" Brown Kinda wish I had waited a while to start planting my garden. The directions on the seed packet always says moisten and keep moist until seed germinates. If I had waited a while that would have been no problem for now- a-days it rains every day. To begin, I had started too early. Jim Hines had come and rototilled my garden because it was quite hard, he had gone over it twice. It was too early to plant yet and as I had been offered a ride down to visit Ray and Norma who had just sold their place on Skanateles Lake and had a new house built in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Before we started I had mentioned to John Legge, my grandson, that I had intended to put some well rotted manure on my garden. While I was gone, John borrowed Fritz's spreader and hand loaded it and spread it and then hooked to a set of drags and drug it in. Garden experts always advise, make sure the manure is well rotted. This had been piled for three years and the manure was well rotted but that doesn't say anything about the weed seeds. Where I haven't gotten to yet because of directions not to be out in too hot sun and the frequent rains, the weeds have made almost a solid sod. John, who is a long distance truck driver, hadn't been home in a month. I have a little garden cultivator, a Mantis, but because I am too top heavy to keep my own balance, I am unable to use it. So the weeds really got a good start. Monica has gone for a visit to someone down in Jersey and took Clem, her big dog, with her. The deer have just found that out and though they seem to prefer Lambs Quarter weeds to any they also like the taste of tomato plants. Speaking of taste, one hot Sunday I thought
that parrot would sure appreciate
Then to complicate things on that same side, Pat and I were both going to Wyalusing with Fritz. She was on one side of her car and I was climbing out on the other side. She was closing the windows and I was hanging on to the top of the door and one of my fingers curled around and got in the way of that glass. So now, in addition to growing some new skin I also have to grow a new nail. Because I planted too early, a lot of the fine seeds never showed up. It was a beautiful day the day I planted them but then we got a spell of cold, nasty weather with no sun and that seemed to keep them from ever showing. Must be a lot of new gardeners this year for Agway had a big bank of seeds, Gerry Shirley tried to buy some late maturing seeds and they told him they had sold every seed. Maybe the high cost of fuel and everything has made folks realize that they had better grow some of their own food. I wonder if the stimulus checks has brought on this flood of begging letters? Someone will bring in the mail and 4 out of 5 envelopes will contain someone wanting a donation. I used to try to help the Indians but some of the tribes' gambling casinos make out so well, why don't they help the hard up tribes? Also there are several new organization using "Save Social Security" as a favorite cause.
